New Life

Mmmm came in and asked if I wanted to hear some good news. Of course I did! He said that the Concord grape vine that we had brutally pruned last fall had some new shoots and leaves on it. We had assumed that the vine was dead and Mmmm was even planning to buy a new vine. Isn’t it appropriate that in Holy Week there should be a reminder in our garden of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

We always had an Easter Egg hunt at our house when Kay was young. Usually the day before, we would color hard boiled eggs. Easter morning she would wear her new Easter dress and sometimes a hat and gloves! She probably felt like those poor cats and dogs that are dressed up and made to feel silly. She would look for eggs and candy and fill her little basket. Sometimes the dogs would beat her to the eggs and sweets. We didn’t even know that chocolate is poison to dogs. One dog investigated Aunt Bernie’s suitcase and ate all the Heath Bars she was taking back to Japan with her. Bad Dog. She looked really happy though.

When I was young, my sisters and I almost always had a new dress for Easter. That would be our “church dress” for the summer. We would pore over the catalogs and pick out the dresses. We would be so excited when Bill Miller, the mailman, would deliver the packages. We would try the dresses on and delight in how beautiful they were. We would also look at our older sisters’ dresses because we would be wearing them in a year or two. We would get new shoes too and they would be our good shoes until winter. We always changed our clothes after church and before we played or even helped in the kitchen.

This year we will go to the 7 AM service at church and think about the New Life offered to us and be thankful that our garments are not Sears Roebuck or Montgomery Ward dresses but Robes of Righteousness given through Jesus Christ.
