I just read that Chuck Jones has passed away at age 89. For those of you who have been living under rocks, Chuck was the animator who drew such beloved characters as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig.
He lived in Corona Del Mar, California, an coastal community between Los Angeles and San Diego. He used to visit the Ritz Carlton Hotel down the road in Laguna Niguel where my friend Bill Parsley played piano in the lobby. When Bill saw Chuck walk through the lobby, he would break into a medley of Warner Brothers music, just to let him know that he was spotted. One time Chuck sketched Bugs Bunny playing a piano on a Ritz cocktail napkin for Bill - it is framed and hanging in Bill's house.
Several years ago, Chuck was asked about the inspiration for one of his Bugs Bunny cartoons. He responded:
"A Warner Brothers executive marched into our studio one day and told us, 'Gentlemen, there is nothing funny about bullfighting. Nothing funny at all! I never want to see you people make a cartoon about bullfighting.' And then he left. Up to that point, none of us had even considered making a bullfighting cartoon."
Truly a gem - he'll be missed.
Quiet day here - I went bicycling in the morning, out past Manayunk along the Valley Forge trail. It was a nice day, but still pretty chilly. I was glad I had several layers and heavy gloves. On the way home I stopped to see THE HOUSE.
Oh, you like to know how it's going? Well, here ya go - new pictures from the last six weeks or so.
[No, I don't have a completion date.]
The Alien seems to be a bit better today. She is interacting much more, and her left pupil doesn't seem to be dilated. I think she may have had a little stroke. I'm going to watch her tomorrow and see how she does. I'll give the vet a call on Monday and see if they feel it would be beneficial for her to come in.
