The Maytag Man

Where is the truth in advertising? The ads on TV would have you believe that the Maytag Man is sitting by the phone and eagerly awaiting your call, desperate for something to do. I have been in Montana about a month now and I have been sitting by the phone and desperately awaiting the Maytag Man. Eunice and Carol’s Maytag dishwasher was one that was recalled. There was some thing in it that could have caused a fire. It was working just fine - until the Maytag man came and tried to repair it. They had to get the part and apparently there was just one number that all of the Maytag men had to call. Needless to say, no one got through. Since then, Carol and I have dishpan hands. We have used paper plates and foregone some of the niceties of dining in order to save dishes.

We have moved Eunice back to Eunice and Carol’s home. It was decided that it would be better for the Carlstrom family if she was not in their home. We have been adjusting to the change and having a lot of fun in the process. Terri and Carol have shopped up a storm and Ned has been magnificent in putting up blinds and curtain rods. We have transformed the living room into Eunice’s living room/bedroom. Of course we are enjoying having Eunice at the dining room table in the evenings and it is great to look at all of her “stuff.” Last night we looked at many of the little cream pitchers that she has collected over the years.

We are going into party mode soon - Eunice will celebrate her 80th birthday on October 14. There will be a modest celebration with family and friends on the 13th at an open house, and I am sure there will be lots of dishes, so Maytag Man - stop fixing those garage doors and water heaters and other non-dishwasher things and get our dishwasher fixed - please.
